Defaced

This filter responds to the simple act of closing one’s eyes: when the eyes shut, the filter seals the face. What appears playful at first becomes restrictive. The work reflects on people whose ability to see, speak, or exist freely is taken away. Across the world, senses are not only physical but political, controlled, censored, or erased. By linking facial movement to limitation, the filter turns the user’s own body into a site of restriction. It asks the viewer to momentarily experience what it means to be silenced, unseen, or unheard, and to recognize how fragile human rights can be.
